reads of 2024

Heyaa Bunnies!

A last lil post about the books I have read in 2024 <3

Before I start I want to explain a bit how I choose books.
I let them choose me.
Whenever someone asks me what I read I never know how to answer.
One thing is clear: I prefer to read in english.
But when it comes to genre or author I prefer to know as less as possible.
Yes, that's right.

A complete remix with just vibes and guesses.
There are a few that I buy intentional but it's an exception.

I either buy them because of the cover, or because I have seen it in a vid.
So sometimes I see a short clip online with "my top 10 fav horror books" and just put them all on my wishlist without looking them up further.
So I know when I want to read, it will be more horror but beside that I don't know nothing.

I think it broadens your horizon.
When you like a specific genre or type of book it is way to easy to start selecting the books more and eventually you end up buying the same story but different.
With this approach I am exposed to new things all the time.
That also means, that sometimes I won't like it.
Not because the book is bad but it hasn't spoken to me.

It also happened that I got a book I was absolutely in love with and maybe wouldn't have picked if I knew what it was about.

So let's stop talking and get into it.

I wish it was more books but beside work and family, I also have different hobbies of course lmao.
And like I mentioned in my last posts, lately I don't feel like picking up a book.

Tip: I also like to get little books, like approx. 20-30 pages.
You only read for like max. an hour and get back on track without having to commit to a bigger book.

Here are my 2024 reads.
Not in the order I read it.

Sally Rooney Normal People

I think it's a bit overhyped. In general I liked the idea of that book but I was no fan of her writing style.
In opposite, I hated it. It was so exhausting, because it would start new scenes with just "her" and "him" etc. and you don't even know who it is about an after like 2 pages you finally get to know who this scene is about and then have to re-read it.

...

Bora Chung Cursed Bunny

I loved this one! It consists of little short horror stories that are written in a surreal magical way, there are hints of real-life situations and you kinda get what it wants to talk about but it's very open-mindedly written with kinda open ends.

...

Lancali I Fell In Love With Hope

"The love of my life wants to die." - the first sentence and the one I knew about when getting this book.
I first imagined it could be about a tragic love story but it's more about sick kids in the hospital.
I felt like this is a great book for teenagers and young adults and I enjoyed reading it.

...

Maggie Nelson Bluets

This is more or less a collection of "blue" things.
I am kinda shocked about how expensive it is compared to its tiny size.
I thought the way she was talking about the color blue was very poetic.
It is true that some colors have like a meaning or a deep emotion connected to it.

...

Annie Ernaux Simple Passion

Here as well a tiny book.
I personally resonated a lot with the way she wrote about loving that man.
It is very tragic and sad but I related with the things she has written.
It is also kinda a wake up call to take a step back and think about it.

...

Thomas Erikson Surrounded By Bad Bosses

tbh I disliked this book a lot.
I heard about his other books and this one was available and also I thought the title was a bit funny.
However, in the book he describes the 4 "personalities" and matches it to the colors red, yellow, green and blue. I'd describe myself to be more of the red or blue-type of person.
All applied to the working scene. He then explains it more in detail and also how it all relates to the other colors. red with red, red with yellow, red with green etc.
Here is why I disliked it: I think, if you actually took some time as a person, and I hope a lot do, you would naturally realize these things about the people around you.
The person with the ideas, the one who likes to socialize, the one who prefers stability and the one who is more or less a perfectionist.
Considering this, this book was suuuper boring, it stretched endlessly.
Also thinking about the fact that this is supposed the be for MANAGERS.
If you actually managed to become a manager,....and not know these things in this book, oh boy.

...

Agustina Bazterrica Tender Is The Flesh
This book is about cannibalism.
The whole story is so vivid and cruel, it is described in a detail and in a way you would have never imagined. It made me sad. It made me angry.
I was very disappointed at the end to figure out he is an asshole too.
10/10.
Get it.

...

Emily Mcintire Hooked

There is just something I love about dark romance books.
Even if the stories are so damn unimaginative and some plots are so....awkward.
You just have to keep reading it lmao.
This one is a about bad gangster/mafia guy that wants to seduce a rich mans daughter to take revenge on him, but finding out that the whole situation is much more complicated than he knew.
Of course the girl is absolutely naive and loves him.
I loved this one so much I decided to get the others from this series from her.
Like the following:

...

Emily McIntire Scarred

Here it is about a girl getting sent to marry a king to then dethrone him as a revenge for her people, the brother of the king is the enemy.
And they fall in love.
And there are more plot twists.
of course.
Loved it. It wasn't as good as hooked though.

...

Robert Kiyosaki Rich Dad Poor Dad

Very good book if you want to get more into finances.
I think it broadens your pov and after reading it you start seeing more chances.
I also advice to play their game online for free.
Suddenly I realized how many potential sometimes you are wasting.
If done right, you should be able to work on your own finances better.

...

Vivian Tu Rich AF
More or less about the same thing.
I personally prefer the book from Kiyosaki, I don't find Vivian Tu to be likeable but I also realise that she is writing in a way that younger people could relate to her more.
I think the last few pages about financial advice in relationship is completely unasked for.
Also it is way too expensive for the content.
If you want to get into financial advice I recommend getting the one from Kiyosaki instead.
It is shorter and has more information.

...

Eliza Clark Boy Parts

A very well written book.
I haven't seen an idea like this before and it is provoking for sure.
I had a hate-love relationship with the protagonist.
She is an asshole but I also relate to her nonchalant character.
The story has an interesting twist to it towards the end.

...

Sarah Kane 4.48 Psychosis

Idk, I rarely like pieces about depression or mental ilnesses.
A hard pass from me.
It is not very "deep" or interesting, it only pretends to be.

...

Sylvia Plath The Bell Jar

Another overhyped book.
Getting to know that it is a semi-biography about the author who killed herself made me view the story a bit from different eyes but it is bad-written regardless.
I enjoyed the pov from the 50s though.

...

Caleb Azumah Nelson Open Water

I am sorry but another overhyped book.
The story was boring and unrelatable.
It seemed like it is only hyped because of the woke plot in it.

...

Mark Manson The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A Fuck

A humorous approach of reasoning living your life without a care.
In the beginning I enjoyed reading it but I have to admit towards the end it felt like the author tried to stretch it and there wasn't anything "new" coming to it.
Definitely not recommended for softies.

...

Laurie Gilmore Cinnamon Bun Bookstore

A cute little love story. The cover makes it look so innocent but it is not!
It has some smut in it.
I enjoyed reading it and got another from the same author.

...

Ryunosuke Akutagawa The Life Of A Stupid Man

It was an approach to pull myself out of a reading blockage again, tiny book here.
However I have no idea what I read.
Omg, I am the stupid man.

...

Walter Isaacson Elon Musk

I usually never cared about celebrities or CEOs or whatever but I have seen that vid of him in front of an audience where he went "blackmailing me with money? go fuck yourself".
I found that likable and looked him up.
He is an interesting personality for sure and so I got his biography.
It is also the biggest book I have read in the year with over 600 pages, regardless I was finished in less than a week.
It also made appreciate using X more.
Getting to know more about him was another turning point in my growth and I am glad I found out about him.
I think I was distancing myself more and more from society and he pulled me back to life.

I also had to giggle about the part where it went like "Of course I had to buy twitter, how else are we supposed to get trump elected in 2024?" just like 2 days after trump got elected.

My New Years Resolution...

I have already mentioned it somewhere in my last posts.
I want to plan more in advance and also live more.
I have kept to myself a lot now and I miss being the careless person I used to be.
I also want to focus on getting back on track with learning languages.
I want to progress in my Chinese and start really learning Japanese in 2025!!
Also want to save money to go to Japan then in 2026 I guess :)

Hoping my resolution is working as good as it worked for the last year.

I had to be at work in the morning, got home to eat something with my parents and then went for a walk with my dog for over 2 hours!!

Oh how I love these kinds of walks.
Just some fresh air, and silence in nature <33

Now I might be able to read some more blogs but then have to help my mum prepare food for the guests.

Getting used to my new haircolor too <3

I wish you all a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
