A group of monks spent decades in disciplined training, devoting their lives to a single purpose: to one day hear and understand a sacred teaching said to reveal profound truth. Only after forty or fifty years of preparation would a student be considered ready.
One day, a band of thieves stormed the monastery. They had heard rumors of this secret teaching and demanded to hear it immediately.
The head monk did not resist. He simply nodded and said, "Very well. Sit down and listen."
From morning until evening, he spoke. Calmly, patiently, he recited the teaching in full.
When he finished, the thieves were furious.
"That's it?" they shouted. "This is what people train their whole lives for? This is nothing!"
But as their anger rose, one by one, they began to collapse.
A young disciple, who had witnessed everything, turned to the master in shock. "Why are they falling?" he asked.
The master replied quietly, "They have heard the words, but they have not prepared themselves to receive them."
