Why I stopped buying gyaru brands

Heyhey it's yapping time!

So I still had like a list of 10 topics to write about and although the decision was quite hard, I picked this one now.
(not at all because Ray just talked about smth similiar).
I think it is very relevant, especially relevant to me, so I think also if you are a beginner this might be something worth reading about.

I love shopping, I really do, but the brand hysteria has robbed me.
There are three short points why it is not worth buying brands.
1. the sizing
2. the pricing
3. the quality

The amount of times I squeezed myself into a LL dress, which, even with shirring, literally cut into my skin under my armpits can't be counted.
The amount of self-hatred, even when pretending it doesn't exist, towards my own body I experienced, simply because I am caucasian.
And we are not talking about a size XL or something...I usually wear something between S-M.
I do not have a bad figure. I personally struggle with accepting my hips and calves (why I also like my legs to be covered lmao) but overall I am skinny/average. I am not tall! Many Ma*rs models were around my height (164cm) as well.
And yet, the clothes barely fit me. There are some JD dresses without sleeves that fit me (also because it has 360-shirring) but that is it.
The moment I accepted that my body is not made for it and I preferred getting clothes that fit me, I started to feel a lot better.
When I lose weight, then to gain back control after letting loose too much or out of health reasons...never because I feel like I should be a lot skinnier so I can fit in these clothes.
Which is yes, tragic, but that's how life is sometimes.

The prices always used to be horrendous.
This is not a thing of today...I lost so much money, trying to get pieces monthly that I am not wearing anymore.
Although some I could resell etc., a lot is just sitting in boxes or in my closet, because it just doesn't get sold..
I keep track of my finances since the moment I started making money and it makes you think a lot, when you see you have wasted approx. an equity ratio of a studio apartment on clothes the past years.
I haven't figured out the extent of my spending until I played the game of "rich dad, poor dad".
I played this game and every single time I got rich and I wondered, why not in reallife...so I paid close attention what I did in the game.
->I paid off dept first to increase income and then spent the income in financing investment that increased my income again.
At first it looked like in reallife I do not have that type of income and this is all games and unrealistic, until I looked up how much you actually need to finance investments.
It is realistic...you just need to keep the eyes open for that kind of thing and gain a sensibility to have perspectives.
I am working a job since 7 years, yet I own nothing...when I already could have some type of investment that makes me more money.
It is not "impossible" to own/finance anything nowadays anyway..it is the money you keep wasting, while looking for excuses. My opinion.
Not anymore for me.

But the prices are also not justified, because these clothes are worth nothing.
They are only worth something because of people who keep wasting their money and being scammed.
Tops ripped, shoes broke apart, the fabrics are sometimes super cheap as well, you can immediately tell...
Even if some of the clothes are being sold off for a fair price on mercari etc., think of packaging, shipping, agency fee etc.
the ratio quality / price is not justified.
Yes, I rather order from AliEx or Shein, where pieces can cost like 10$ too, but mostly I don't pay shipping or customs or any other hidden fees and I am able to wear something that is new now and last me a couple years. My AliEx dresses are 3+ years old and I can keep wearing them.
Some of the mercari stuff I ordered didn't last me a day.

Yes I know "but the trash of fast fashion" and "the working conditions"..
It is a huge difference if you get big hauls and throw it away after one use, or get just a few pieces and actually wear it for as long as possible if you cannot afford "quality" pieces.
I have ordered some of these "quality" pieces for 100€-500€ just to try it out..
those are not miracle pieces...stop telling you yourself this.
If you cannot afford anything else, get the Shein.
My hauls have become a lot less and few times a year but I am happy with what I am receiving
(except the sneakers from AliEx earlier this year, that was just bad luck yikes).

All over I can also say, if you research gyaru fashion well, you will notice that these brand items are not needed at all. Gyaru focuses a lot on makeup and hair instead of clothing, it just appears to you that way it is about clothes because you keep looking at "substyle"-inspo (I will write a post to this sometime as well I think).

Give yourself room for creativity and you will find in local shops or cheaper online shops valid alternatives. If you really want that unique look, there is always the option to DIY.

This is what alternative fashion was all about: the passion for creativity with clothings and DIY. If you go watch kawaii international or whatever, they have shown people making their own bags, accessories, complete outfits etc.

And if you really can't leave it at all, make sure you fit, the price is acceptable and it is a piece where the quality is more durable (like i.e. cotton pieces).

  1. I agree with your points! Well except that, maybe it’s what I was buying, but for me stuff really was cheap in the last. Like my ¥300 GLADNEWS coat… but it’s not what matters. We really ought to be more creative!

  2. I buy mostly offbrand too. It's really difficult to even locate the brand items I would want anyways since they are mostly from the late 90's ●︿● I mostly only buy magazines bc they don't have to fit me, lol.

Since meeting more jfashion people irl, it seems like the need to buy brand is a lot more of a social media pressure. A lot of the people in my local group make their own clothes and it's actually really encouraged to do DIY. It's not specifically a gal group, most are lolita, but I still feel like it's an example of what you mean. We always talk about how the people doing alternative fashions originally made do with what they had access to, especially before people were able to order stuff online from anywhere in the world. I think having that constraint can make you more creative.
